Live music in Canterbury and where to find it

Freshers’ week isn’t the only chance to get dressed up, go out and meet new people.

Canterbury has a banging scene for the arts, music and theatre. With so much going on, it’s only too easy to miss out! So here is a list of some of the best live venues and events that our little city has to offer.

For the music lovers…

The Jolly Sailor hosts live music and a regular Monday night open mic – perfect for anyone with a guitar and a nice set of pipes. Performers get a free drink.  Need I say any more?

The Ballroom plays host to a variety of local musicians, bands and Dj’s throughout the week, as well as offering its own Wednesday night open mic.

Canterbury Festival starts on 14th October, and like Christmas, only comes around once a year. The likes of Newton Faulkner, Imelda May and The Hoosiers are billed to play in venues around the city. It will also be hosting tons of performances, talks and exhibitions throughout October and November. Check out the festival’s website for a full list of events.

The best way to find out about live entertainment in Canterbury is to explore. Don’t be afraid to delve into the high street. Take the flyers. Reply as ‘going’ to that random gig on Facebook. There is a world outside the Student Union bar.

But, whatever you do, be sure to stay safe and have fun!
