Canterbury might not be as big as other university towns but that doesn’t mean the nightlife’s boring.
Whether you’re planning to come to Canterbury for the first time in September or returning for another year of study, the city has more than enough to offer in the way of light or heavy refreshment, day and night.
Places to go out out
Below are some of the places students in Canterbury like to go to on nights out, although it’s not a complete list of all the venues in the city.
Chem is most student’s first choice when going on a night out. Very cheap drinks, three floors and theme nights is why everyone loves Chem.
Cuban is one of the go to places in Canterbury for a night out. Some people even like it more than Chem. Drinks can be expensive on a weekend but weekdays at The Cuban offer a cheaper night for students.
If you’re looking for a quirky night out in a contemporary venue, then Steinbeck is the place for you. With two floors and reasonable drink prices it’s somewhere everyone should try.
Two bars, basement dance floor and cocktails left right and centre Alberrys is a frequent favourite for students looking for a refreshing experience. Drinks tend to be slightly more expensive here but still wont break the bank.
Smaller than the other venues but still offers a solid night out with a bar serving all your favourite drinks including cocktails and they sometimes have deals on too.
Experience a smart night out with a twist in The Ballroom. Dress to impress in this classy but funky venue and enjoy reasonable priced drinks although not student (Chem) prices.
Places to go out
Below is a list of places to go for a quieter drink after a busy day or even a quick one in the day time, these places are spot on and can even be host to pre-drinks.
Otherwise known as top spoons, the pub offers pretty decent food and a large range of drinks at famous Spoon’s prices that we all love.
Brewery is a great place to go in the day time and has a decent size beer garden. Prices aren’t too bad but not as cheap as students might be used to. They sometimes do nights with a DJ which can be fun and makes a change to the usual night out venues.
If you fancy a quiet drink, then La Trappiste is the place for you. With outside tables, this is a popular choice when the sun is shining.
The Lounge is run by CCSU and offers cheap drinks and good food. Next door is Barista & Baker where you can grab a sweet hot chocolate or nice coffee.
This is a more up-market pub and offers posh food and a good range of drinks, although not as cheap as Spoons, it’s a welcoming venue with a small garden.
If you’re looking for a posh drink or maybe even trying to impress someone then The Pound could be a good choice. You can even sit in the some of the city’s ex prison cells. Drinks aren’t cheap but for special occasions this is a good place to go.
The Penny is a top choice for students because their drinks are reasonable prices, they do good food and they offer a rewards card. They also show major sporting events on a big screen and have a nice size beer garden.
