5 Reasons Why Printed Books Are Better

Tablets might be all the rage but they’ll never replace the real thing, here’s five reasons why printed books are better.

Lurking in your bedroom somewhere, you probably have a Kindle or tablet that allows you to read E-books to your heart’s content. There’s nothing wrong with this in principle, but in my humble opinion, these electronic alternatives will never beat the real thing.

Here’s my top 5 reasons why…

Square Eye Syndrome

The nature of modern life is that most of us already spend a large majority of our day looking at screens, so why would we want to come home and look at another one? Books offer an organic alternative that is simply unmatched by shiny plastic monitors.

Printed Permanence

One major benefit of print books is that they are yours for life. There’s no worry of their screen smashing or becoming hideously outdated, nor do you have to plug it in at the end of every day to recharge its batteries. All in all, they’re just far more satisfying and convenient.

Sharing is caring

There’s something slightly magical about finishing a great book and being able to pass it on to a friend who you know will love it just as much as you. You’re not only giving the gift of the book itself, but all that comes with it (hours of enjoyment, transportation to new worlds, etc).

You CAN judge a book by its cover

We’re always told that you shouldn’t, but with print books you really can judge a book by its cover, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. If you’re drawn to the pink and pretty girly-ness of the Sophie Kinsella books, or the artistic mystery of the John Boyne covers, then follow your instincts and go for it! You be the judge.

The Smell

Deny it all you like, nothing, I repeat nothing, smells like a book. Old books, new books, it really doesn’t matter: simply nothing beats the faint muskiness of the pages of a book.

What’s your stance? Do you agree that printed books beat e-Books every time, or are you a fan of more modern technologies? Have your say in the comments below!
