Revealed: The 4 restaurants in Canterbury with the lowest hygiene rating

Restaurants with the worst food hygiene ratings in Kent have been released, and Canterbury has four restaurants on the list.

Ratings are handed out by the Food Standards Agency through their Food Hygiene Scheme. They range from 5 (very good) to 1 (urgent improvement required).

A rating is given by the agency based on cleanliness of buildings, hygienic handling and food management. Some restuarants listed are in surrounding towns to Canterbury, but are covered by Canterbruy City Council.

Here are the the four worst rated in Canterbury:

Bamboo Tiger Ltd, Simmons road, rating: 2

The cafe and restaurant of Bamboo Tiger Ltd. was given a 2 out of 5 rating for its food hygiene.

The Food Standards Agency inspected the cafe on August 23 and was reviewed as having to improve their ‘hygienic food handling’.

Other areas, such as cleanliness of the restuarant was given ‘good’, while their ‘management of food safety’ was seen as ‘generally satisfactory’.

Bangkok House, 13-15 Church Street, rating: 2

Bangkok House is a Thai restaurant on Church Street St Pauls.

Inspected on April 18 the four star TripAdvisor restaurant was told their ‘hygienic food handling’ and ‘cleanlieness’ of the restaurant were seen as needing improvement.

Some of the most recent comments on the restaurants via TripAdvisor, include:

  • “Terrible DO NOT USE”
  • “One of the best Thai ever.”
  • “Not real Thai food.”
  • “Not recommend, terrible hygiene”

The New Inn, 19 Havelock Street, rating: 1

Inspected on March 21, The New Inn was reviewed as needing ‘major improvement’ with regards to it’s ‘management of food safety, including ensuring that food sold or served is ‘safe to eat’.

Recent reviews on TripAdvisor:

  • “Friendly pub”
  • “The greatest!”

Masala Gate, 34 Northgate, rating: 1

Inspected on March 15, this takeaway was given the second lowest hygiene rating by the Food Standards Agency.

Similar to the previous restaurant, Masala Gate was reviewed as needing ‘major improvement’ for their management of food safety.

The restaurant currently has a 3-and-a-half star rating on TripAdvisor.
