Deliveroo rider attacked in attempted robbery

A Deliveroo driver was pushed to the ground by two men as they attempted to steal his bike last Saturday night.

Kent Police have confirmed a delivery driver was attacked on St Georges Street last Saturday between 8:30 to 8:45pm.

An eye-witness to the incident, who wishes to remain anonymous, ran over to the attack to help the Deliveroo driver.

“You don’t expect to see this thing anywhere, especially not in Canterbury.”

They said: “We were walking past KFC and heard a bike fall on the floor and some shouting. I ran over and originally thought someone had fell off their bike.

“When I got closer I saw two blokes trying to steal a Deliveroo riders bike and bag. A couple others ran over and managed to push blokes off the poor rider who was really shaken up.

“Both the men were wearing balaclavas, they didn’t look like they were dressed up for Halloween.

A Deliveroo rider was attacked outside a KFC restaurant in Canterbury city centre.

The witness was surprised to see the attack happen in Canterbury, they added:

“You don’t expect to see this thing anywhere, especially not in Canterbury. It was like something from the film Kidulthood.

“The Deliveroo rider seemed okay, although a bit roughed up and looked like he bad been punched. Hopefully is alright.”

Deliveroo were aware of the incident and have been in touch with the rider.

A spokesperson said: “Safety is our priority and we have a number of steps in place for riders to follow if they feel unsafe or are targeted by criminals while working with Deliveroo.

“Police guidance on on reporting crime is made available to all riders.”

A spokesperson for the police said: “Kent Police received a report of an attempted robbery in Canterbury on Saturday 28 October 2017.

“The incident is reported to have taken place outside a fast food restaurant in St George’s Street between 8.30pm and 8.45pm.

“A takeaway delivery worker was pushed to the floor by two offenders who tried to steal his push bike. But when a member of staff from the restaurant intervened, the two men made off empty-handed.”
