Get your skates on because an ice rink is coming to Canterbury

The lights are up, the city is feeling festive and for the first time Canterbury opens its own Christmas ice rink.

Canterbury City Council have teamed up with local event organising company ‘Noah and the Shed’ to open the ice rink in the bandstand area in the Dane John Gardens.

The ice rink opens to the public on Saturday 2nd December, remaining open until New Years Day. It will be open from 11am until 6pm daily, and until 7pm on Saturdays.

The chilly attraction is part of a revamp of Christmas in Canterbury, which has also seen the Whitefriars Christmas market expand from 43 sheds up to 70 this year.

Leader of Canterbury City Council, Cllr Simon Cook said: “We are very excited to be bringing a Christmas ice rink to Canterbury for the first time.

“It’s something lots of people have been asking for and will really enhance the festive atmosphere in the city.

“We expect the demand to be high, so people will need to get in quick when booking opens.”

The council has worked closely with local residents to ensure that they support the project in its first trial year. Steps are being taken to minimise damage to the grass and there will be security on site at all times.

Alongside the ice rink there will be refreshments, a viewing area for those not skating and a play area for young toddlers, making it attractive for all families this winter.

Booking for a skate at the ice rink will be online only. Final plans for the opening of the rink are currently being finalised, more information will be released soon.
