Ex-Christ Church student Jo Marney in Meghan Markle race row

A former CCCU student has hit national headlines after racist texts about Meghan Markle were revealed.

Jo Marney, the now ex-girlfriend of Henry Bolton, was dumped by the UKIP leader and suspended from the party after the Daily Mail exposed her racist messages.

What she said

In her messages Marney makes a number of derogatory comments about black people and the girlfriend of Prince Harry, including:

“I wouldn’t with a negro.” she says. “What’s wrong with black people?” the recipient replied, before Marney said: “Ugly. Not my thing. They don’t turn me on.”

The glamour model carried on to say: “She’s black” and “This is Britain not Africa.”

The aftermath

Jo Marney, with her ex-boyfriend and UKIP leader Henry Bolton.

Marney, who graduated from Canterbury Christ Church in 2013 with a First Class degree in Multimedia Journalism has since apologised for her comments.

In a statement, she said: “I apologise unreservedly for the shocking language I used. The opinions I expressed were deliberately exaggerated in order to make a point and have, to an extent, been taken out of context. Yet I fully recognise the offence they have caused.

“No offence was intended and, again, I apologise unreservedly for any such offence or hurt that my messages have caused to members of the public, members of UKIP, my friends, family and loved ones.

“I have disappointed them all and let myself down. I cannot sufficiently express my regret and sadness at having done so.”
