Unified win big at the SPA National Conference 2018 #SPANC18

Unified won their biggest award yet at the Student Publication Association (SPA) National Conference 2018 in Cardiff on Saturday (April, 7).

The multi-award winning student media site for Canterbury Christ Church University have scooped another prestigious prize making it their second independent award this academic year.

Unified beat five other publications to win the Best Newcomer award

The team won the Best Newcomer category at the glamorous award ceremony in Cardiff.

The category, which is only for publications that have been running for less than three years, was hotly contested with six other publications on the shortlist.

Chair of the SPA Dan Falvey announced Unified as the winner: “When judging this category we said, they conducted beautiful investigations, held those in power to account, this publication packs a mighty punch.

“It’s diverse and dynamic website showcases a daily mix of features and hard news. It’s sassy, it’s smart and has produced some serious credibility within the short time it’s been online.

“It’s absolutely fantastic. I look forward to seeing it continue to flourish, the winner is Unified.”

In his acceptance speech Editor-in-Chief James Hind said: “It’s absolutely amazing to win, Unified has really exploded on campus this year and has gone from something that was like a student blog to a real news site that’s hit local and national headlines.

“It’s really nice to be recognised for the hard work that not only this team here puts in but everyone at Unified.”

The site was also nominated for four other awards including:

  • Best Sports Coverage
  • Best Multimedia Journalism
  • Best Reporter
  • Best News Story

Unified won the Best Developed in the South of England regional award back in December 2017 but have now stepped up and won Best Newcomer in the country.
