Canterbury Freshers’ Week events if you don’t drink alcohol

Planning to be a sober student and go alcohol-free during Freshers’ Week? Calling all teetotals, we’ve got the perfect events for you.

Freshers’ Week is renowned for being a 7-day drink up, with many societies hosting their freshers events in clubs and bars. But for those of us who don’t drink, you may be wondering what there is for you.

Fear not, this is our guide to all events which don’t revolve around drinking throughout the week.

But just a note, it’s more than socially acceptable to go clubbing or any other freshers’ event sober, but if clubbing isn’t your thing then…

Crafternoon

Monday 17 September: Crafternoon, 13:00 to 16:00

The SU are hosting a crafts and arts day on the first day of freshers, so if this sounds like your cup of tea, why not check it out. The afternoon will even involve some cake decorating.

Who’s Got Game? Games night

Video Games. Board Games. Inflatables. What more could you want from a night? Competitions on Tekken, Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat will be on the big screen all night, as well as other video games dotted around, including Time Crisis, Halo 2, Super Smash Bros and many, many more.

If you prefer board games, you can put your hand to a game of buckaroo, connect 4, Jenga, and other board games, or even have a go on a giant twister board. Best of all? It’s all free.

Freshers’ Festival

Tuesday 18 September: Freshers’ Festival – 12:00 to 16:00

Described as a way to take a breather from the craziness of freshers, the festival gives you a chance to meet fellow students in a fun environment. Take a bounce on the bouncy castle, eat some BBQ food, and play with the furry animals – what better way to spend a Tuesday afternoon. It’s free to get in to the festival.

Chooseday Chill

Tuesday 18 September: Chooseday Chill – 17:00 to 19:00

Chooseday Chill is a two-hour session dedicated to relaxing and unwinding. Take part in yoga sessions, badminton, giant jenga, bowling, pickleball and other activities. On top of that, get the chance to meet likeminded students.

The BIG Quiz

Sunday 23 September: The Big Quiz -19:00 to 23:00

Who doesn’t love a quiz? The Big quiz night is a great chance to meet both fellow students and your future SABBs. While there will be drinking going on, quiz nights can be just as fun without alcohol.

Good list of events, however any events at Lounge Bar and Kitchen need ID as drinking can be involved, so it wouldn’t be a sober environment which means anyone without Photo ID who wouldn’t be there for drinking miss out of an evening. Might be something to be bought up if there is going to be a commitment to not revolving around drinking. Otherwise some of these events I will certainly enjoy.
