So, you’re moving away from home? Here’s everything you need to know about moving into Pin Hill.
Pin Hill student accommodation…
This is the epitome of ‘student halls’, there are a variety of flats in a four different ‘houses’ in Pin Hill: Runcie, Coggan, Benson, and Ramsey. This site offers flats that can hold up to six people with as little as two sharing.
Most of the flats here don’t have washing machines, but there is a communal washing machine room in Benson House. You will become very accustomed to asking yourself ‘where is my washing money?’ or ‘can I leave this for another week without washing it?’
Parking is not a problem as students can easily apply for a space underneath the building in a locked car park, but it is advised to apply early as spaces are limited.
Security here is round the clock and they often patrol the area throughout the day, this can be especially helpful for feeling safe, as Club Chemistry is 30 seconds away from your front door.
Location, location, location
This site is also conveniently location right next to Canterbury East, making commuting home or around Kent a breeze. Not only this but the Dane John Gardens are only over the bridge, this can be a great place to hear live music, watch demonstrations and just chill out after a hard day’s work.
How far is it to uni and the library?
Christ Church’s main campus is approximately 15-20 minutes from Pin Hill on foot, however if you get stuck there is also a free shuttlebus service from St Augustine to the Old Sessions House at the top of the university.
Augustine House is CCCU’s library, open 24hours a day and is only a five-minute walk from your accommodation. It’s great for studying solo on the newly installed touchscreen computers or doing group projects in rooms you are able to book. The Izone is also located on the ground floor of Augustine, this is where if you have any question about anything at all, you will get help for it.
Where can I shop?
Due to Pin Hill’s convenient location, students who live here have the best choices for where to shop. Being right next to the city centre is very useful, you can pop into town over the city wall bridge and access the high street and Whitefriars Shopping Centre, or you could just pop over the road to Aldi, only a five-minute walk away. There are also supermarkets in Wincheap like Morrisons and Iceland, however these are a little further afield.
Nightlife and Socialising
As mentioned, Club Chemistry is practically on your doorstep, making nights out incredibly easy. Students that live here save money on taxis and are safer, as they do not have to traipse through the city centre or back lanes to their accommodation.
If you don’t feel like clubbing, the newly renovated Thomas Ingoldsby Wetherspoons is a 10-minute walk on the city wall. Canterbury is home to many night-time hotspots of bars, pubs and the CCCU Student Union, where you can drink and relax.
At the Fresher’s Fayre, you can expect to see representatives from almost every society, sports team, and shop from Canterbury and CCCU, this is a great way to get involved with activities, meet new friends, and get some amazing deals!
The Student Union also holds events to help people find friends and meet new people, if you need a little help along the way.
In my opinion…
Pin Hill is a conveniently placed accommodation site and perfect for Fresher’s that want to meet new people, have a great time and are always up for anything. The location is close to the city centre, social spots and has great shopping opportunities. Be prepared to stay up late and have the ultimate first-time-away-from-home experience!
