CCCU’s Sports Team of the Week!

Here at UNIfied, we like to give a shout-out all the great people and teams from CCCU, so we’ve decided to start a Sports Team of the Week, to congratulate the great performances from our teams.

This week, it’s Women’s Basketball, who thrashed Medway 67-25 away from home.

Zita Mendes was the team’s top scorer. She outscored Medway herself, scoring 35 points.

The victorious team. Zita Mendes, number 11, scored 35 points.

Captain Eftychia Panayiotou was full of praise for Mendes.

“Zita is an amazing basketball player. She has been playing since a very young age and it’s an honour playing with her.

“She took the role of a point guard deciding the right passes and the right time to go to the basket.

“Zita is an amazing basketball player – she’s been playing since a very young age and it’s an honour playing with her”

Eftychia continued: “She is well-known for her driving skills to the basket. She is definitely a great asset to have in the team, she motivates everyone and is a great basketball player to look up to.”

They decided a fast start was the best way to put the Medway team on the back foot.

“From the first quarter we decided to go hard. We realised what the weaknesses were and used it to our advantage. Nay Akinade was so amazing at stealing the ball that we didn’t let them score for a long time.

“We have definitely grown as a team”

“Training is such a big contributing element to winning. It helps us become a team, learn together and get fit together. This way we are able to play as a team.

“Other great performances were from our freshers, Mary Ofoedu, Andrea Gonzalez and Janka Phamova who played great and scored their first buckets.

“From this game we have learnt that in the last 5-6 weeks we have definitely grown as a team. Getting better and more confident each game. But we still need to look at what we can improve and one thing is our fitness.”

Their next game is against City, University of London at the Sports Centre on Wednesday.
