Kinky Boots is more than just another drag show musical

Were my expectations high? Yes. Did Kinky Boots meet those high expecations? Heck yes.

Kinky Boots isn’t just another musical about sassy drag-queens. No. Underneath all the glitter and glam – lies a very special tale about the power of acceptance.

Kinky Boots will take you through a party on stage, no exaggeration, it’s literally a party on stage whenever the drag queens are performing. At one point, I had to remind myself that I was watching actors on stage, because it truly felt like they were any performers having the time of their life.

Not to mention that music legend Cyndi Lauper was the one who wrote all the songs, I have to applaud the brilliant cast members for never letting the energy die down from start to finish. From belting ballads to upbeat toe-tapping hits, the Marlowe in Canterbury was filled with clapping audience who were at awe at the outstanding performances.

There may be a few sad scenes in the whole musical, but most of the tears that you’ll be shedding will be tears of laughter! For this aspect, I have to give it to the sass-queen ‘Lola’ (played by Kayi Ushe) and Paula Lane’s character ‘Lauren’ for the fits of giggles that we all had.

Even though it took a while to get in to, it was definitely worth every minute. The story will take you from the mundane building of Price and Son’s shoe factory to Lola’s fabulous world of drag – the musical then found a magical way to bring two opposing worlds into one fantasy on a Canterbury stage.

The only question you’ll have at the end of the show is: How the hell can they dance like that in stilettos?!
