Varsity 2020 – Everything you need to know about the new scoring system

With Canterbury Varsity less than 2 weeks away here’s all you need to know about the new scoring system. 

This year there are 4 scoring categories, with each sporting event being in either Category 3, Category 2, Category 1 or a Non Point Scoring event.

If a game is a Category 3 then the winners will be awarded 3 points. Category 2 games are worth 2 points and a Category 1 game will be worth 1 point.

Category 3

The criteria for Category 3 is that the event is either a first team fixture, a well established 1-squad-only game such as American Football or a combined individual type fixture.

These are the events that come under Category 3 and will be worth the highest amount of points – 3:

  • Women’s Rugby 1’s
  • Men’s Rugby 1’s
  • American Football
  • Women Hockey 1’s
  • Men’s Hockey 1’s
  • Jiu Jitsu
  • Women’s Badminton
  • Men’s Badminton
  • Women’s Volleyball
  • Trampolining
  • Kayaking
  • Women’s Cricket 1’s
  • Men’s Cricket 1’s
  • Dance
  • Women’s Tennis
  • Snow Sports
  • Equestrian
  • Women’s Lacrosse
  • Men’s Lacrosse
  • Women’s Football
  • Men’s Football 1’s
  • Park Run – Athletics
  • Netball 1’s
  • Swimming
  • Men’s Basketball

Category 2

Category 2‘s criteria is that they are 2nd team fixtures. These are the events that are worth 2 points:

  • Men’s Tennis 2’s
  • Women’s Hockey 2’s
  • Men’s Hockey 2’s
  • Badminton 2’s
  • Men’s Cricket 2’s
  • Men’s Rugby 2’s
  • Netball 2’s

Category 1

Criteria for games that come under Category 1 is that these are all the other team fixtures or games in their second year of participation.

These are the fixtures worth 1 point:

  • Men’s Football 3’s 
  • Men’s Football 4’s 
  • Netball 3’s 
  • Netball 4’s 
  • E-Sports 
  • Pole Fitness 

Category 4

Lastly in Category 4, the criteria is that these are fixtures that either non-competitive or they are in their first year of Varsity.

These are:

  • Cheerleading 
  • Climbing 
  • Pool

Overall there are 95 points up for grabs!
