Varsity 2021 has been cancelled

Varsity 2021 has been cancelled due to the continuing lockdown restrictions.

The event, which is so important to the students of Christ Church, had been provisionally moved to May in order to try and make it happen.

But with current restrictions still extremely strict, Canterbury Christ Church and Kent University have made the decision for it not to go ahead.

This is the joint statement from both Universities:

“Dear Christ Church Students’ Union and Kent Union Sports Club Members,

“Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic Christ Church Students’ Union and Kent Union, with the support of Christ Church Sport & Active Health and Kent Sport, have taken the decision to cancel the 2021 Canterbury Varsity Event that historically takes place between Canterbury Christ Church University (CCCU) and the University of Kent (UoK).

“We know how important the Varsity event is to all of you as Sports Club members, Society members and the wider student community as a whole; however, we feel this is absolutely necessary in order to protect the health of students and staff, and is the only viable course of action considering the likelihood of continued restrictions on social distancing over the remaining part of winter and into the spring.

“Whilst we had also previously looked to ensure that Varsity would be able to continue to take place this year by provisionally moving the event to May, the continued uncertainty over COVID-19 restrictions and the subsequent planning required for this have unfortunately made this option unviable too.

“As outlined in previous communications we are constantly monitoring all Government, NGB (National Governing Body), and University updates, so that if any restrictions are lifted sufficiently later in the academic year, we can begin to investigate the potential for small-scale recreational sporting activity.

“We appreciate this is another difficult piece of news following on from the BUCS announcement, but we know that the Team Christ Church and Team Kent communities will support each other.

“We would like to remind students from both institutions that university wellbeing services are also available if you feel you need to access formal support:
