Strictly 2021: Week Four – Party dances and second chances

We were noticeably low on numbers this week. With Katie eliminated, Robert withdrawn and Ugo missing a week all at once, it felt later in the competition than it was. It seemed more like Week Eight than Week Four!

So, how did everyone do this week?

Rose & Giovanni – Cha-Cha-Cha (Score: 27/40, -9 since last week)

Dancing to Prince’s ‘Raspberry Beret’, she and Giovanni earned 27 from the judges – a 7 from Craig, a 6 from Motsi, a 6 from Shirley and an 8 from Anton.

Charlotte’s rating:

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Tom & Amy – Foxtrot (Score: 29/40, -3 since last week)

Tom and Amy’s first ballroom routine went down well! They were meant to have one in Week Two, but did not compete that week. Dancing to Frank Sinatra’s ‘Fly Me to the Moon’, they scored 29 – a 7 from Craig, an 8 from Motsi, a 7 from Shirley and a 7 from Anton.

Charlotte’s rating:

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Tilly & Nikita – Paso Doble (Score: 32/40, +5 since last week)

Their spicy Paso to Rodrigo y Gabriela’s ‘Diablo Rojo’ earned a 32 from the judges – a 6 from Craig, an 8 from Motsi, a 9 from Shirley and a 9 from Anton.

This dance got some mixed reviews online, and I wasn’t keen myself… it just didn’t feel like her dance to me!

Charlotte’s rating:

Rating: 2.5 out of 5.

Greg & Karen – Samba (Score: 19/40, -7 since last week)

Dancing to Los del Rio’s ‘Macarena’ (I know, right?), he and Karen scored 19 from the judges – a 3 from Craig, a 5 from Motsi, a 5 from Shirley and a 6 from Anton.
This was one HELL of a routine entertainment-wise (and earned three votes from me!) but it just wasn’t very good technically. The dreaded Samba really was one to dread for Greg, but it was all in good fun.

Charlotte’s rating:

Rating: 2.5 out of 5.

John & Johannes – American Smooth (Score: 29/40, -10 since last week)

Dancing to Aretha Franklin and George Michael’s ‘I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)’, he and Johannes earned 29 from the judges – a 6 from Craig, a 7 from Motsi, an 8 from Shirley, and an 8 from Anton.

Charlotte’s rating:

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Rhys & Nancy – Salsa (Score: 31/40, -6 since last week)

In a bouncy routine to BTS’s ‘Butter’, he and Nancy scored 31 from the judges – an 8 from Craig, an 8 from Motsi, a 7 from Shirley and an 8 from Anton.

Charlotte’s rating:

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Sara & Aljaž – Tango (Score: 36/40, +2 since last week)

This lady just keeps getting better and better! Dancing to Carlos Gardel’s ‘Por una Cabeza’, she and Aljaž earned an impressive 36 – a 9 from Craig, a 9 from Motsi, a 9 from Shirley and a 9 from Anton.

Charlotte’s rating:

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Dan & Nadiya – Cha-Cha-Cha (Score: 26/40, +5 since last week)

Dancing the cutest Cha-Cha to MC Hammer’s ‘U Can’t Touch This’, he and Nadiya received a 26 – a 5 from Craig, a 7 from Motsi, a 7 from Shirley and a 7 from Anton. He was too shy to dance to this song at his school discos, but he did a great job in front of the nation. He even made a new friend in doing so – MC Hammer himself!

Charlotte’s rating:

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Judi & Graziano – Waltz (Score: 24/40, same as last week)

Dancing a beautiful routine to Mariah Carey’s ‘Hero’, she and Graziano scored 24 from the judges – a 4 from Craig, a 6 from Motsi, a 7 from Shirley and a 7 from Anton.

Charlotte’s rating:

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Adam & Katya – Argentine Tango (Score: 32/40, +12 since last week)

In a huge improvement from Week Three, he and Katya scored 32 dancing to Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Tango in the Night’ – an 8 from Craig, an 8 from Motsi, an 8 from Shirley and an 8 from Anton. This was the first Argentine Tango of the series, and he and Katya set the bar high.

Everyone was focused on what happened right at the end of the routine, when it looked like Adam leaned in to kiss Katya, before composing himself and smiling. His partner (with whom he has a son) reacted to the thousands of posts made about it. Adam then spoke out on Twitter and said: “To everyone who wants to see what they want, your comments have real life consequences. I will not be overcome or lowered by your gossip.”

Charlotte’s rating:

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

AJ & Kai – Samba (Score: 28/40, -7 since last week)

Dancing to Camila Cabello’s ‘Don’t Go Yet’, she and Kai received 28 from the judges – a 5 from Craig, a 7 from Motsi, an 8 from Shirley and an 8 from Anton.
Once again the dreaded Samba proved difficult here – it’s plain to see that AJ is one of the most capable dancers of series 19, and she didn’t do as well as she usually does.

Charlotte’s rating:

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

How did the leaderboard look?

Sara and Aljaž topped the leaderboard for the first time with 36, and Greg and Karen were at the bottom with 19.

Who was in the Dance Off, and how did it go?

This week, Judi and Graziano had to dance again, this time against Greg and Karen.
For the first time this series, only three votes were needed as the first three judges were in agreement.

Craig, Motsi and Anton all decided to save Judi and Graziano, which meant that Greg and Karen were sent home.
This gave Judi another chance to dance, and she’ll be hoping not to be in the dance-off for a third time in Week Five.

There was one last comfort to Greg and Karen – Shirley said she would have saved them if she could have.

Any news before Week Five?

Ugo and Oti will return next week. We can’t wait to see them back!

Also, in an iconic upload from the BBC Strictly social media team, we ‘found out’ what Danny Dyer was thinking when the cameras cut to him on Saturday night. Everyone was a bit perplexed as to why Danny was there and why they chose to show him at those times, and their Instagram team made the most of it.

Watch this for a laugh:
