Strictly 2021: Week Eight – Crying off makeup, and a leaderboard shakeup!

This week was BIG. Scores of 38, 39 and 40, a total surprise in the final rankings, and a beautiful closing number that brought everyone in the room and at home to tears. Keep reading for all the details!

So, how did everyone do this week?

Tilly & Nikita – Quickstep (Score: 29/40, -2 since last week)

Dancing to Damita Jo’s ‘I Won’t Dance’, she and Nikita scored 29 from the judges – a 7 from Craig, a 7 from Motsi, a 7 from Shirley and an 8 from Anton.
It wasn’t her strongest routine – she looked out of breath, and a little bit frightened in places! A good effort though.

Charlotte’s rating:

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

AJ & Kai – Paso Doble (Score: 28/40, -9 since last week)

Dancing to Ruelle’s ‘Game of Survival’, she and Kai scored 28 – a 6 from Craig, a 7 from Motsi, a 7 from Shirley and an 8 from Anton.
According to the judges, this was a lot weaker than most of her routines. Viewers rallied around her by voting repeatedly to try and save her from the dance-off, as they thought she usually performs a lot better and was also under-marked.

Charlotte’s rating:

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Dan & Nadiya – American Smooth (Score: 29/40, +1 since last week)

Dancing to The Proclaimers’s ‘King of the Road’, he and Nadiya scored 29 from the judges – a 4 from Craig, an 8 from Motsi, an 8 from Shirley and a 9 from Anton. His first nine! The five-point difference between Craig and Anton may well be the biggest scoring discrepancy the show has ever seen, though.

Charlotte’s rating:

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Rhys & Nancy – Charleston (Score: 40/40, +6 since last week)

In an immaculate routine to Bob Wilson’s ‘The Charleston’, he and Nancy scored a flawless 40 – a *10* from Craig, a *10* from Motsi, a *10* from Shirley and a *10* from Anton. Motsi called it “the Charleston of the season”, with good reason – it was unreal.

Charlotte’s rating:

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Sara & Aljaž – Argentine Tango (Score: 32/40, -1 since last week)

Dancing to Barbra Streisand & Donna Summer’s ‘No More Tears (Enough is Enough)’, she and Aljaž received 32 from the judges – a 7 from Craig, an 8 from Motsi, an 8 from Shirley and a 9 from Anton.

Charlotte’s rating:

Rating: 4 out of 5.

John & Johannes – Samba (Score: 38/40, +3 since last week)

Dancing to Dark Latin Groove’s ‘Acuyuyé’, he and Johannes scored a near-perfect 38 – a 9 from Craig, a *10* from Motsi, a *10* from Shirley and a 9 from Anton. In my opinion, this was the best Samba since Kelvin and Oti’s in 2019!

Charlotte’s rating:

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Tom & Amy – Viennese Waltz (Score: 30/40, -8 since last week)

Dancing to Goo Goo Dolls’s ‘Iris’ in his best ballroom routine yet, he and Amy scored 30 from the judges – a 7 from Craig, an 8 from Motsi, a 7 from Shirley and an 8 from Anton.

Charlotte’s rating:

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Rose & Giovanni – Couple’s Choice (Score: 39/40, +7 since last week)

Dancing to Clean Bandit (feat. Zara Larsson)’s ‘Symphony’, she and Giovanni scored an almost perfect 39 from the judges – a 9 from Craig, a *10* from Motsi, a *10* from Shirley and a *10* from Anton.

This beautiful dance moved everyone to tears, as in the middle of the routine the music was stopped and the lights went down to a single spotlight. This gave a powerful insight into Rose’s life, as there was no difference in the energy of the dance, but it was stunningly silent.

Charlotte’s rating:

Rating: 5 out of 5.

How did the leaderboard look?

Rhys and Nancy topped the leaderboard with a perfect 40, and AJ and Kafinished last with 28.

Who was in the Dance Off, and how did it go?

This week, Sara and Aljaž were up against Tilly and Nikita.

Craig, Motsi and Anton all voted to save Tilly and Nikita, which sent Sara and Aljaž home.

Shirley said that she would have also saved Tilly and Nikita if she could have voted.

Any news before Week Nine?

There have been a lot of rumours circling about pro dancers making Series 19 their last – namely, Katya, Oti and Aljaž. Katya has spoken out on Twitter to deny the rumours, ending a long message with: “I’m not quitting, I’ve not had a tantrum. I love the show and I shall keep dancing”.

Nothing has been confirmed about the other two dancers, so we advise not to believe anything you read until they say something themselves!

UPDATE:

Also, Craig has tested positive for COVID-19 and so will not be on the judging panel in Week Nine. Standing in for him this weekend is actress and singer-songwriter Cynthia Erivo:
